Outside buyers and a lift in local numbers brought extra competition at Stortford Lodge on Wednesday, with a large portion of the cattle offering heading outside the area, while local buyers proved hard to beat in the lamb pens.

A lift in store lamb numbers was timed well following rain throughout Hawke’s Bay, as more local buyers were joined by those from Manawatu and Waikato. Very heavy male lambs were underestimated, with a large portion of the offering making $84-$94, though cpk rates dropped significantly for the very heavy types. Buyers were also reluctant to pay more than $90, which limited the number of bids for the heavier end. Medium to good male lambs earned $77-$86, while similar ewe lambs sold on a very steady market at $76-$89.

Breeding ewe numbers were also low, but there was a notable preference for scanned-in-lamb lines. Five-year Romney in good condition fetched $106, while run-with-ram equivalent earned $99.

Store cattle buyers came from far and wide for a moderate yarding of cattle. The R2 heifer section was the biggest and local buyers hardly got a look in, as outside buyers battled it out. Angus returned $1185-$1270 at $2.68-$2.78/kg, smaller lines $2.80-$2.83/kg. Lighter Hereford-Friesian weren’t far behind at $2.70-$2.79/kg. Angus R2 steers sold for $1338 at $3.14/kg, while a heavier line made $2.98/kg. Friesian bulls lighter than 400kg were very popular and a line of 30 fetched $1130, $3.02/kg.

Weaner lines were mainly small, but again it was the bulls that stood out, with Friesian making $558-$652, heavier South Devon-cross, $930.

Two lines of vetted-in-calf beef cows realised $1238-1250, $2.21/kg.
