Hill-country farms produce most of the lambs and beef calves in New Zealand yet they have received little scientific research in the past 20 years. In the first of a three-part series, Country-Wide June focuses on hill-country farming, its problems and the opportunities. Also in this issue farm consultant Bob Thomson, who has been advising farmers for 40 years,says the important basics are still the same. They are subdivision, stock policy and management,and soil fertility. Farmers need to do these well before rushing into sowing new pastures.
