Tuakau sales April 26, 27, 28

Thursday’s store cattle sale at Tuakau drew a small yarding of about 300 head, with numbers back because of the short week, Keith West of Carrfields Livestock reported.

Buyer numbers were also down but the steer market remained firm. A small entry of 30-month steers, 520-580kg, traded at $2.77-$2.87/kg. The best of the 18-month steers sold up to $1200, with 400-420kg lots making $2.90-$2.95/kg and 370-400kg lots earning a similar rate.

Good weaner steers, 220-250kg, sold at $770-$880, 160-200kg $660-$720. Lighter steers made $520-$590.

The bull offering was small. A good pen of Friesian 1-year bulls, 260kg, sold for $800, Friesian weaners, 211kg, $645.

Heifer prices eased by 5-8c/kg on the last sale. Good 18-month lots at 400-420kg traded at $2.63-$2.66/kg, with the next cut at 370-400kg making $2.60-$2.65/kg. The better weaner heifers, weighing up to 215kg, fetched $580-$630 and lighter types earned $460-$520.

About 400 cattle were presented at Wednesday’s prime sale. Prices for steers and cows firmed slightly and heifers held value. Heavy steers traded at $2.75-$2.80/kg, medium $2.69-$2.74/kg and a handful of lighter steers $2.55-$2.60/kg.

Heavy heifers sold at $2.65-$2.70/kg, medium $2.64-$2.65/kg.

Cow prices increased by about 2-3c/kg on the previous week. Good beef cows returned $2.10-$2.18/kg and heavy Friesians $1.80-$1.90/kg. Medium boners earned $1.70-$1.77/kg and lighter cows $1.55-$1.65/kg. A small entry of bulls sold at $2.66-$2.80/kg.

The Monday sheep sale moved to Tuesday, drawing a small yarding. Heavy prime lambs traded at $102-$110, medium $90-$100, lighter primes $75-$80. Store lambs earned $55-$70, ewes $60-$70.
