Numbers were moderate at the Taupo weaner fair and adult cattle sale on Thursday, but that didn’t deter buyers, with locals joined by buyers from South Auckland, King Country, Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay.

Bidding was enthusiastic for most lines, and demand stayed strong from the first pen to the last. While much of the focus was on the weaner fair part of the sale, there were also some good quality R2 cattle, albeit in small lines.

Hereford steers, 372kg, sold for $1160, $3.12/kg, Hereford-Friesian, 366-397kg, $2.92-$2.98/kg. Hereford-Friesian heifers were also well sought-after, making $890-$1030, $2.81-$2.93/kg.

Weaner prices reflected strong demand, with Angus heifers in particular in the spotlight, fetching $485-$645, with the lighter line earning $4.11/kg. The better steers returned $715-$790, while 154kg Angus made $645, $4.19/kg.

Friesians were the main feature in the bull pens, with 180-196kg selling at $630-$692, $3.50-$3.53/kg.
