A big yarding of prime ewes featured at Coalgate on Thursday, and with competition for ewes strong at present, prices firmed.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

Most were medium to good types and sold for $80-$109, with a small lighter end at $55-$77.

Prime lambs held their value with 1700 penned, and most earned $90-$127, while store lambs were forward types and traded at $73-$87. Two lines of medium quality breeding ewes sold for $95-$96.

It was another good result in the cattle section of the sale. Prime numbers almost doubled, but this didn’t dent prices.

Prime steers held steady as straight beef types generally went for $2.90-$2.95/kg, with others at $2.80-$2.90/kg. Prime heifers lifted 5-10c/kg on last week to $2.81-$2.89/kg for 505kg plus, nearly in line with what steers were making. A reasonable number of prime bulls 473-536kg made $2.58-$2.60/kg.

A large consignment of one-year Charolais-cross steers and heifers were the highlight of the store offering. These steers weighed in at 330-375kg and sold for $1180-$1290, $3.38-$3.57/kg, while the heifers were 285-370kg, trading at $910-$1155, $3.10-$3.20/kg. Other Angus heifers 235-300kg were spread across $3.10-$3.20/kg.

Weaner Friesian bulls 120-140kg made $470-$480 and beef-cross bulls 106-117kg went for $455.
